introduction to my world
I was born in a big city in China. I stayed in my hometown for 13 years and decided to go out and see what the rest of the world looks like. I stayed in London for more than half a month and was impressed by the kindness of British people, so I wanted to make a change in my life. I felt like I had followed the path set by my parents for more than 10 years and that it was the time to make my own decision, so I applied for an American high school on the East coast and spent 3 years there.
After high school, I come to Emory University and chose ENG101 for the first semester. This class is new to me because we just read novels or poems and wrote essays in high school, so I have never had a class that focuses on a social problem Besides, I like reading news online everyday, so I just realized social problems become more and more intense in my hometown, especially problems about people with disabilities. For instance, there are an increasing number of poor children losing education and old people lacking care nowadays, but there are also federal governors who embezzle millions of dollars. There are people working 18 hours a day, but who can hardly eat three meals a day. There are also people who spend thousands of
dollars in one meal. Therefore, I hope that through learning what disabled American life, I can also find out about how Chinese life is disabled.
More importantly, I want to choose business as my major in the future and I know that economics is one of the most important factors that effect disabled people’s lives, so I want to know if it is possible for me to change the situation in the future. I want to know which social factors related to economics actually impact disabled American life the most. Last but not least, I am interested in visual art and I have had experiences making many posters for many activities or organizations. Therefore, I hope the society will use advertisements and posters to let people pay attention to help people with disabilities, to let people realize that the disabilities is a social problem, rather than a private difficulty, and to let people know that helping the disables is also helping themselves.
